Hip & Knee Replacement Program

On May 31, 2007 surgeons in six hospitals affiliated with the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) -- Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre, Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto East General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital-- -- launched the Hip and Knee Replacement Program to improve access to care, reduce wait times for hip & knee replacement surgery and encourage patient choice.

The program uses a Central Intake Centre and Assessment Centres to

  • Improve coordination of care between the patient’s referring physician and the surgeon’s office;
  • Provide patients the benefit of a comprehensive assessment by a specially trained multidisciplinary team of professionals at the Assessment Centres and patient education;
  • Give patients who do need to see an orthopaedic surgeon the choice of waiting to see the surgeon to whom they have been referred or booking an appointment with the surgeon who has the shortest waitlist;
    Provide surgery within the recommended Orthopaedic Expert Panel timeframe for access to surgery (i.e. 182 days from referral to surgery);
  • Offer patients a way to re-enter the system through the Assessment Centres within the first year after the initial appointment, should their condition change;
  • Provide personalized care.
