Where is Toronto Central LHIN?

Toronto Central LHIN is located in the core of the City of Toronto, with its edges reaching out into Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke. Toronto Central LHIN shares its borders with Central East LHIN, Central LHIN, Central West LHIN and Mississauga Halton LHIN.

Over 1.3 million people live within the Toronto Central LHIN area. Thousands more come into the LHIN every day to work, visit and receive specialized health care services.

What is a LHIN?

Created by the Ontario government in March 2006, LHINs are crown agencies who work with local health providers and community members to determine the health service priorities of the regions. LHINs plan, fund, coordinate and deliver home and community care services to citizens across the city, in partnership with:

  • Hospitals
  • Community Support Services
  • Long-term Care
  • Mental Health and Addictions Services
  • Community Health Centres

What do LHINs do?

Prior to the formation of LHINs, health care services in Ontario were fragmented and many health care providers delivered care in isolation. Patients and their loved ones were forced to make their own way through a very complex health system as they moved from one health service provider to another.

LHINs were created to change all that. In March 2006, the Local Health System Integration Act, transformed the way our health care system is managed.

On June 7th, 2017, home and community care services operations were transferred to Local Health Integration Networks. This system change, a part of the Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care, was seamless for patients and home care clients in order to ensure that there was no disruption to care.

How are LHINs governed?

LHINs operate as crown agencies and are governed by a board of directors who are appointed by the province after a rigorous skill and merit-based selection process. The board of directors is responsible for the management and control of the affairs of the LHIN and is the key point of interaction with the ministry. CEOs report directly to the LHIN boards.
