What we have done so far

What consumers of health care say about this priority
For the people who use health services in the Toronto Central LHIN, an affordable, value-based health system is very important. The chart below shows the results of a recent survey where over 100 respondents were asked how important it was that the LHIN focus on finding ways to increase the value and affordability of health care services.

The Value and Affordability agenda has its roots in the first Integrated Health Service Plan, which identified “Back Offices Services” as one of nine priorities. Recommendations from the Back Office Council led to the launch in early 2009 of the Toronto Central LHIN Partnerships for Service Improvement (PSI). Four initial PSI demonstration projects were announced in June 2009 spanning human resources, legal, information management/information technology, infection prevention and control, and pharmacy.

In June 2009, as part of the Hospital Accountability Planning Submission (HAPS) process, hospital CEOs worked with the LHIN to undertake six HAPS Value and Affordability task forces. This has resulted in a short list of shared collaboration priorities which hospital CEOs are driving forward, covering such areas as laboratory services, clinical efficiency, and acute care for mental health patients and children with complex or chronic conditions.
